Halloween treats...

OK...these are embarrassingly easy, but here goes:

ALIEN COOKIES

1. Add green frosting to a sugar cookie.

2. Spread frosting.

3. Add googly eyes.

Be sure NOT to serve these to anyone young enough to EAT the googly eyes! But they're really cure to plate up for a party or to have your kids make their own. Put a bowl {or a shot glass} on your table as an "eyeball bucket" for your guests to toss their discarded googlies.

BRAIN CUPCAKES
1. Make or buy cupcakes.

2. Frost with little squiggles to make it look like a brain.

I got the idea from FamilyFun.com - which has much better pictures than I do. :)

Ready to party...

So here's a glimpse of the Halloween tablescape I've been working on for Luxe...

To see LOTS more, visit the Luxe blog!

On My Desk Thursdays...

Inspired by one of my favorite sites, On My Desk, I have decided to share a photo of whatever is on my desk {whether it's art in progress or a gigantic mess} every Thursday. This week it's...

...cookie decorating stuff!!! I'm putting the finishing touches on my Luxe Halloween table setting and these are the makings of my alien cookies...see the googly eyes in the shot glass? Those are part of the table setting too...I'll post the photos later of how it all turned out - as well as how tomake "brain" cupcakes...so keep checking back today!

So, what's on your desk? Post a link & let me know if you're playing along - I'd love to look at your desk too! Or just hop on and say hi. I know you're reading. :)

Rocking my vote...

I did it! I went ahead and voted today...I make it a rule to never mix politics and blogging, but I am a big believer in voting & really advocate that everyone gets to the polls anduses their voice...

I am a big Shepard Fairey fan & I decided to share one of his pro-voting posters from this year today in honor of the upcoming election. Early voting is such a relief...I'm s0 glad I did it ahead of time!

Speaking of Pumpkins...

And SPEAKING of pumpkins...I found this on YouTube & wanted to share it!

From the Luxe Halloween countdown...

I did this project today for the Luxe Halloween countdown...

before:

after:

When I go up to Target later today I am soooooooo loading up on these dollar spot beauties! They smell pretty goo too - they have them in pumpkin, pear & vanilla. I want to get some more of the pumpkin ones for Thanksgiving & some pear & vanilla to do up for Christmas...

Also I have to get supplies for the final idea in our Halloween Countdown - a Luxe Halloween party tablescape, complete with "brain cupcakes" (if they turn out!)...so stay tuned & live Luxe!

Do you recognize this?

...I can hear the Monty Python line in my head "excuse me, is this a piece of your brain???"

That is my brain. All exposed and broken (and color corrected, I might add). It's the guts of my external hard drive - and everything I've done for the last two years.

Cross your fingers and say a prayer for a full recovery. That WAS the back up...I am so stressed...thank God for good friends. Ben is on the case & hopefully we can get the data out of there sometime later this week!

"Sense"-ational Sundays...

Our senses tell a story. I've committed to recording my 5 senses for the past week - every week - as an exercise to explore my sensory world. I challenge you to do the same. If you choose to do so, just blog your 5 senses every Sunday & let me know - I'd love to read along!

I SEE: Mr. Fix-It

My adorable husband constructed this banister for the steps on our front porch to make it easier for my parents to get in & out of our house. Here he is demonstrating how strong it is...

I HEAR: Missy Higgins & Ben Folds in concert!
Meg & I went to see Ben Folds at the Palladium last Thursday & it was a blast!!! I even ran into an old friend there (as a matter of fact I swiped this pic off his blog since I forgot my camera).

So, if you're not familiar with either artist, I put together a little playlist for you to listed to. Great stuff - hope you enjoy it!

I TASTE: Mock/Crock Chicken Pot Pie
I came up with a great new recipe this week that was a huge hit with my family so here it is:

Chop the following: chicken thighs, yellow onion, fresh garlic, carrots, celery & potatoes.

Add to crock pot with 1 can cream of chicken & herb soup, 1/2 a jar of chicken gravy & water. Add black pepper, tarragon & sage. Cook on low all day.

Create a roux
with butter & flour and add milk. Stir into crock pot to thicken.

Make jumbo flaky layer biscuits. Split them in half and place on top of bowls of the chicken mixture. It's a great (and easy) alternative to pot pies!

I TOUCH: Clutter
I started a real thorough de-clutter yesterday. I got through 2 rooms, which is not as far as I wanted to get, but really makes me feel like I accomplished something.

I SMELL: Breakfast
We are not really breakfast people. But with my dad staying here, I've been making him breakfast every morning. Raisin bread toast smell like "morning" now - it's different.

NEXT SUNDAY...
Be sure to come back next week when I'll be celebrating A YEAR OF SUNDAYS!!!! Can you believe I've kept this up every Sunday for a year?!?!?!? I'll be doing a big giveaway as well as my usual post. See you next week!

Shop Etsy Saturdays: Layer Cake Shop

I believe in Etsy and in the spirit of independent craftsters everywhere. I love to buy handmade and unique items for myself, my home and as gifts. As someone who sells on etsy as well as shops there, I have found hundreds of talented craftsters and amazing creations while I have been online. My tastes range from Mexican Day of the Dead to Japanese kitchy cute and from homemade soaps to paper crafting originals, so if one week isn't your speed, be sure to come back on the next Saturday and see what my next pick is! Every Saturday I have committed to sharing one of my favorite shops with you...

Layer Cake Shop

Want cupcake supplies? I have found the spot to go for FUN stuff! It all started when I was on the hunt for "cute" (or even anything but pastel solid) cupcake papers...and I found this adorable shop. It's full of cute papers & whimsical toppers (lots of them with a retro feel), for cupcakes for any occasion!

On My Desk Thursdays...

Inspired by one of my favorite sites, On My Desk, I have decided to share a photo of whatever is on my desk {whether it's art in progress or a gigantic mess} every Thursday. This week it's...

My mom's sewing box. It's one of those random things I gathered from her house after she passed away. It's been "missing" in my house for over a year now. I guess Matt tried to do a button repair when I was out of town & it ended up in his stuff...doesn't matter. The point is I found it this week and it was such a pleasant surprise. I've kept it out. I love all the old needle cards...when was the last time needles were 40 cents anyway??? The needle book with the vintage illustration of the little sewing girls is my favorite. It's sitting on some oilcloth that I absolutely HAD to have {about six months ago & that I still haven't done anything with}. I even dreamed about it the other night - so I'm keeping it out, just in case I actually have time to do something fun!

So, what's on your desk? Post a link & let me know if you're playing along - I'd love to look at your desk too! Or just hop on and say hi. I know you're reading. :)

I SEE: iGoogle

OK, I could be exceptionally behind the curve here...but I just discovered iGoogle. It's one of the perks of setting up a new laptop - I have to explore new things. So this is my new home page - changing art headers from an artist I'm really into, a skinnable calculator & calendar, a weather report & a to do list (keeping me SO on track!). I love being able to put my home page to work like this...and it's so pretty!

I HEAR: Lisa Garay's Tunes
Lisa is on our dt & I love her blog. She recently reskinned it & it went from awesome to awesome-er {sorry - that's just the best way to describe it!}. She has a project playlist player on her blog and I've listed to it several times through. I've even taken notes. I LOVE her taste in music! You ROCK, Lisa! {you know it's the truth when you can see her blog as a tab in my screen shot - lol!}

I TASTE: Sugar Free Pudding

Having a diabetic house guest has really changed our eating habits. But I rediscovered my love for sugar free jello pudding! We tried pistachio & rice pudding but my fav of the week was - SF Cheesecake pudding served over a crushed graham cracker with fresh blueberries & strawberries on top. Wowzers...yummo!

I TOUCH: Air Mattress
Since my dad is convalescing, we gladly gave him our bed to recuperate in. Our guest room only has a twin & after a week we couldn't stand being apart anymore & broke down and bought a really cool/comfy air mattress. It's soooooo much better than last week I can hardly describe it! Viva la air mattress!!!

I SMELL: Rain
You know the smell - wet earth, green stuff. We *finally* got a decent "cold" front {as in we dipped into the 50s} and a good rain this week. Sweater weather & rain smell? It doesn't get much better than that...other than combining that with a good book, a cozy blanket & dinner in the crock pot!

Julie Grace
Cute & quirky paper items. I especially love the little "quote boxes" {altered match boxes with fortune sized quotes in them}! I might have to make a few of these myself for gifts. hmmmmm...lots of inspiration!

It's really precious stuff - you should go check it out!

On My Desk Thursdays...

Inspired by one of my favorite sites, On My Desk, I have decided to share a photo of whatever is on my desk {whether it's art in progress or a gigantic mess} every Thursday. This week it's...

...ready to alter Halloween projects! I've been working on the 13 ideas in 13 days Halloween countdown for the Luxe blog & I realized I needed a few extra projects to finish it out. I've been dying to do something creative lately, so I went to Target & loaded up on things to alter for the countdown! I couldn't help grabbing my bottle of Vampire wine for the photo...Let's see - I spy: chocolate & candy corn, a green tape runner, some Martha Stewart labels, a couple of candles from the dollar spot and - can you see the little white blobs in the basket??? Those are my favorite - itty bitty bottles of bubbles to pass out with our candy {not for my project at all, I just had to have them!} - and they all look like bloodshot eyeballs!!! I got a bag of 30 for $3.99...what a deal! here's a close up with a nickel to give you the perspective...

So, what's on your desk? Post a link & let me know if you're playing along - I'd love to look at your desk too! Or just hop on and say hi. I know you're reading. :)

Has it really been five years???

Mom...I think about her all the time. I still feel like I haven't taken the time to grieve yet. I miss her so much and I am stunned that today is the fifth anniversary of her death.

*sigh*

This year I can post with a bittersweet smile instead of the usual veil of tears...{maybe I am better adjusted this year}. So, instead of the usual photos ...I decided to post a couple that made me smile.

That face is "I can't believe you're taking my picture when I'm TRYING to fix my b-r-a strap!!!" There was mom, chatting away with some of her friends at church. That was "her spot". There were chairs there in the 70's...later they put in a pew. She always sat in the same spot to visit after church as long as I can remember.

I can still feel her hugs...I look at this and it's like a smile or a warm blanket.

Here are a few thank yous for my mom:
  • thank you for choosing to raise me
  • thank you for believing in me
  • thank you for teaching me every craft & hobby under the sun
  • thank you for making creativity a priority in our home
  • thank you for late night crafting sessions when I was WAY too young to be staying up that late!
  • thank you for all the wonderful memories.
I still miss:
  • your smile
  • our talks, especially your stories
  • the way you would run your fingers through my hair...
  • you.
Ok, that's it...any more and I will start crying. And today, well today is a day for remembering the good times.

I SEE: Ugly Betty & other shows in my DVR

I did some late night catching up on my shows this week. {I wasn't sleeping real well} I LOVE Ugly Betty - it's a smart, funny, melodramatic show with great actors. Speaking of shows (the Office)...I'm so into watching Michael & Holly I don't even miss Pam. Is that wrong?

I HEAR: Pandora
I go through phases...and I'm totally back into listening to Pandora at work. I love it since you can type in a song or musician & they pull artists with similar sounds. I've found a lot of great music through Pandora! Here are the "stations" I listened to the most this week: Cyndi Lauper, Sarah McLachlan, Ben Folds, St. Louis Blues, Regina Spektor, The Moldy Peaches & The Apples in Stereo.

I TASTE: Pork Tenderloin
I made one of the best pork tenderloins I ever have this week & it was totally a fluke! I rubbed it down with roasted garlic & patted in salt, pepper & rosemary. Then I just baked it on 350 for about an hour. It turned out so moist & yummy my family thought I was a rock star...

I TOUCH: DIRTY DISHES!!!
It's a vicious cycle. I'm cooking so much more these days....but I feel like it's double the cooking, four times the dishes.

I SMELL: Flowers

My family is all home from the hospital now & my dad ended up staying with us for a bit while he's on the mend. So his flowers {from his fab veterinarian} are on our dining room table. So cheery.

Shop Etsy Saturdays: GO STEAMPUNK!

I believe in Etsy and in the spirit of independent craftsters everywhere. I love to buy handmade and unique items for myself, my home and as gifts. EDM Designs
"Steampunk" refers to works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used {usu. 19th century/often Victorian England}, but with prominent elements of either scifi or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in books by Verne or Wells. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of our technologies. Steampunk jewelery uses modern utilitarian objects {gears, parts} that have have been fashioned into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical art - i.e. "steampunk" style.

There are great steampunk stores all over etsy & their creations are fascinating! They're not "cheap", but these are pieces that are guaranteed to be conversation starters. And if you're a scifi girl, they're absolutely essential!

What if...

...the things we collected - collected us?

This is an ad that was never released for the Rotofugi toy store & gallery. The concept was created by a small ad agency local to Rotofugi called Country Club Chicago, produced by RSA Films and directed by Acne Films. The commercial was the prize in a contest sponsored by National Cinemedia, but never really saw the light of day other than it’s recent posting online. I found the link over on UK online toy & art mag, Vinyl Abuse & liked it so much I decided to share it today!

On My Desk Thursdays...

Inspired by one of my favorite sites, On My Desk, I have decided to share a photo of whatever is on my desk {whether it's art in progress or a gigantic mess} every Thursday. This week it's...

A GIGANTIC MESS!!!! Well, with all the family time I've had zero chance to create anything. To add insult to injury {literally}, last week BOTH my work & home laptops completely crashed!!!* So, this is a corner of my brand new personal laptop & the chaos that is my "work" desk at home. {I have a "work" desk and a "creative" desk back to back & I roll back & forth in my chair.} Let's see...what else is in there? Lots of stuff I usually keep in reach...hair clip, couple of spirals {with notes on an upcoming Christmas project - not too exciting}, a Luxe catalog with somebody's phone number on it, a box of labels & puffy envelopes, my metal ruler, red embroidery floss, a sharpie & pen and...my favorite - for no logical reason {i.e. Meg put it there & I just now realized it} my tower of itty bitty buttons from Magic Scraps!

*so, yeah. I'm still having some technical difficulties. I temporarily can't get into my personal email...so if you need me please email me at emily@luxedesigns.com or at my new email addy - emilyadamsonfire@gmail.com. thanks!

Post a link & let me know if you're playing along, I'd love to look at your desk too! Or just hop on and say hi. I know you're reading. :)

I'm a ColorLOVER...

I'm a colorLOVER - or, technically, a "colourLover". I *adore* this UK color combination inspiration website.

I have literally been referring back to this palette for months. I love it. No, I LOVE IT. Very pulp comics/retro fabulous. I drew off a similar palette for my last Harajuku layout, but want to do something fab with the full spectrum soon. What are your favorite colors or color combos?

You know it's love when...

Matt was out late the other night helping a friend move & my early bird husband (usually asleep by 10) was out til 1 in the morning. He thought it was a good idea to take the trash out before he went to bed, so he did then he crashed hard. Flash forward to the next morning...I'm asleep & he's (somehow) made it to work on time. My phone rings..."Sweetie, I think I dropped my phone in the front yard last night. When you get up could you look for me please?" So once I figured out it wasn't raining or anything, I said sure, hit the snooze & fell back asleep (oops).

So when I woke up for real, I went into the front yard and started calling his phone from our front porch. I was holding it to the ground and was bent over like I was sweeping the yard with a metal detector...I'm sure I looked DE-ranged! So no luck...kept going...and then I was all the way to the street. One more try and...

Our trash bags are ringing.

You gotta be kidding me. My uber tired husband threw his phone away when he was gathering trash. So I had to go through a whole trash bag to recover it. *gross* THAT is love...Thankfully it didn't land in a wet or uber disgusting bit so "it's alive".

Moral of the story: don't ever take out the trash when you're exhausted. Friends don't let friends trash tired...or something like that...

Living in a Handmade Nation...

Have you heard about Handmade Nation? It's currently a book & is a documentary in production scheduled for release in 2009. Be sure to check out the site, visit their online store to support production costs and catch the trailer.

I'm an uber-believer in supporting handmade goods & I found this great video about how etsy works and wanted to share it...

...no disrespect, but the founder of etsy looks about 17. I dunno, it surprised me. Regardless, it's just lovely!

And then there's this fun etsy shoppers animation...too funny!

"Sense"-ational Sundays...

Our senses tell a story. I've committed to recording my 5 senses for the past week to explore my sensory world. I challenge you to do the same. If you choose to do so, just blog your 5 senses every Sunday & let me know, I'd love to read them.

I SEE: My Family
...and lots of them! We do well in crisis mode & I got to hang with various people in shifts pretty much all week. I can't remember EVER having this many phone conversations with them too!

I HEAR: Annoying Beeps
I've been logging a crazy number of hours at the hospital this week & everything beeps...bend your arm *BEEP*...move a little *BEEP*...laugh *BEEP*. Luckily we didn't have any scary beeps, just annoying ones, but man, there were a LOT of them!!!!

I TASTE: A Corndog with YELLOW MUSTARD
Yes, I know...this may seem very normal to some of you BUT...my whole life I've had this strange aversion to mustard. It's always completely grossed me out. Then I discovered honey mustard salad dressing and I thought - hmm, that's kind of OK. Then I started making honey mustard marinade & experimented with wholegrain mustards and thought - hmm, that's downright tasty. Well, it finally happened. Matt bought corndogs at the store this week and he made us some for lunch last Sunday afternoon and his yellow mustard looked so good on it I tried it. And guess what??? It was really good! So yes, I'm 37 & that was the first time I really tasted mustard. So that's a big deal...I'm kind of excited.

I TOUCH: Our new swing-thing
For our anniversary gift to each other this year we bought a pair of nice chairs for our front porch and an UBER comfortable bench swing-thing for the back yard. LOVING the swing-thing!!! {officially called a "3-person swinging lounge"} It has an awning and folds out to be a surprisingly comfortable bed...awesome for reading, napping & relaxing outside! We got an amazing deal from Lowe's since we were there the night they were resetting the section from outdoor furniture to Christmas.

I SMELL: Formula 409 & no more weird smell
Oof...I did a complete refrigerator/freezer scrub down, filter replacement & general fridge overhaul. I hate to even mention it...but somehow a piece of cheese {wrapped, thank heavens} fell behind the vegetable drawer and got stuck...*shudder*. Anyway. Thank God that mystery's solved and that experience is behind me now...

I believe in Etsy and in the spirit of independent craftsters everywhere. I love to buy handmade and unique items for myself, my home and as gifts. Every Saturday I have committed to sharing one of my favorite shops with you...

My Little OogaBooga
Completely bizarre, so ugly they're adorable, huggable, lovable monsters. This kind of shop is exactly the reason I started experimenting in making softies. Pictured are the Green Apple OogaBooga & the Tropical Red OogaBooga. Be sure to check out some of her other wild creations like the Hot Pink Baby Safe Robot, the Spunky Robot and the Baby Cyclops.

We've been bamboozled!!!

OK, so it was our anniversary yesterday, right? Well, Matt's allergies are out of control and I went straight from work to the hospital. Once we both landed at home we had to run a few errands so before you know it, it's 10:20 and we haven't "done" anything for our anniversary. So we decided to head to Braum's to pick up their single sundays as a treat. We ordered (basically) the same thing - I love the peanut butter cup sunday (a hot fudge sunday with peanut butter sauce) and he loves the original hot fudge. When we got home and opened the bag this is what we found...

...what the??? These are supposed to look the same!!! The one on the right had melted, runny whipped cream & the cherry was so sad it had sunk to the bottom...but sunday #2 had virtually no ice cream in it! Obviously this represents a serious quality control issue. LOL...Matt said he was so tired he couldn't go back to Braums so he asked me to take this picture and email it into corporate...so we'll see. Harumph!

On My Desk Thursdays...

Inspired by one of my favorite sites, On My Desk, I have decided to share a photo of whatever is on my desk {whether it's art in progress or a gigantic mess} every Thursday. This week it's...

...paper. No plans for this combo yet, but I love it & know a page is brewing! I went scrap-shopping last week & the middle two are new finds I picked up when I was out. So from left to right we're looking at Luxe, Making Memories, Chatterbox & Luxe again. Love that shade of green - so glad it's popular right now!

Post a link & let me know if you're playing along, I'd love to look at your desk too! Or just hop on and say hi. I know you're reading. :)

Happy Anniversary Matt!!!

Happy anniversary, sweetie! I can't believe we've been married NINE years today! love you!!!!

A dose of reality...

Feels like everybody in my family is sick or dealing with medical issues. So I've been hanging out at the hospital a lot (family members on 2 floors at once!) and on the phone a lot giving & getting updates. So that's just...crummy. Not a lot to say right now - still a lot of gray areas as far as what people's status are. Special thanks to my bff, Angie who talked me down from my inevitable mini breakdown the other night. If you're a praying person, please include "Emily's family" in your prayers - we need all the help we can get! thanks...
