Inspired by Tony Soulie...

This painting started it...I saw this Soulie & fell in love. My studio at home & my office at work are painted this rich, warm yellow. I love all his city works...he's really inspiring me to paint on photographs.

So, I started small scale, with this $3.99 mouse pad from Target with the New York skyline on it. I used some different techniques for the splatter accents, but I dig it this way. I finished it this weekend & moved it up to my desk at work today. When I have some spare time there's a lot more I want to try...

Can we talk???

I'm chatting tonight over at the Scrap Diner! The chat starts at 8 PM CST & I'd love it if you joined in...

Luxe is the manufacturer of the month for June at the Diner, but we've already posted our challenge for the month & are doing the chat a few days early to kick it off right.

If you're not already a member of the diner, registering is easy. Once you're logged in, go to the Tiki Lounge to join in. Hope to hear from you tonight!

"Sense"-ational Sundays...

Our senses tell a story. I've committed to recording my 5 senses for the past week to explore my sensory world. I challenge you to do the same. If you choose to do so, just blog your 5 senses every Sunday & let me know, I'd love to read them.

I SEE:
A clean house. A made bed. Space to create in my studio. No to do lists. It's a good feeling. Today will be my creativity day. I'm planning to take advantage of my creative space for the rest of the afternoon...

I HEAR:
I created a Sundays playlist for my top songs of the week...

I TASTE:
I try not to stay home when Matt goes out of town. I've always enjoyed doing things alone...going to movies, galleries, out to eat, etc. With work I've even become really confident traveling alone. So each time I find myself on my own I try to "make the time count" and not just sit around. Well, Matt went to Donnie's to help with a project & all my friends were out of town or otherwise tied up so I ran some errands, went to the library & took myself to La Madeline for lunch. I was sitting in a quiet corner listening to the classical music and I relaxing when I realized I really prize that independent part of myself - it made the meal even more delicious. So my taste this week was that meal - a chicken friand & a petite Caesar salad.

I TOUCH:
Matt got out the spiral binder last week & knocked out some new books {i love these!} and I added rub ons to some of the funky clipboards I brought back from Japan {finally}. We'll be adding these to Matt's etsy shop over the next week or so.

SMELL:
Hot, cooked car & crisp, cold air conditioning. We got up to 99 this last week...oof, it's early in the season for that. It got me scrambling for some new tops {why do I always have tons of stuff to wear in the winter, but every summer have no idea what I wore the summer before?}. I guess I would describe hot car smell as slightly melty plastic and air conditioning as amplifying the "indoor smell" of wherever you are. Thank heavens for air conditioning in Texas summers!

Party girl???

Ouch. My head is still throbbing a bit. I woke up at 9 to my also hungover husband making deformed, lumpy pigs in a blanket & coffee. (He's so funny - he'll stuff 2-3 sausages in a single "blanket" if he thinks the dough is too big instead of splitting the dough in half. They're hilarious looking.) I ate some & promptly went back to bed & woke up at 12:30ish...what was I thinking?

Yesterday started out like any other day - I worked all morning. Then I took a half day and I ended up going on a major cleaning jag - laundry, straightening (even my studio), etc...seriously, 5 hours of cleaning. I took a little nap & overslept the party I was going to, but showed up 2 hours late and hung out with the girls (lots and lots of girls - I was hanging with Tracy & her other friends who are moms and they were having a sleepover the same night for the kids - 3 13 yr old girls, 3 10 yr old girls & 2 smaller ones...hormone drama! wow) I think my fav moment was then one of the 13 yr olds was telling us a story about - something - and then she said "So I said - why you all up in my kool aid? You don't even know what flavor it is!" We died laughing...and kept saying it to each other for the rest of the night. I love girl talk. I had a couple of glasses of red while I was there (which I never usually drink because it gives me such a headache) and I didn't leave until 1:30.

Meanwhile at the house of Adams, our Uncle Donnie showed up to spend the night (long story). Donnie got there about the same time as Matt got home from work and Donnie pretty much gave him a beer the minute he got home...so hours passed in the same manner - now you understand Matt's condition this morning. So I get home at 1:30 AM. My front door's open. My husband is asleep in our bed & Uncle Donnie is nowhere to be found. So back out into the night I go...every once in a while I can hear him laughing, so I know he's out there somewhere. I found him on my neighbor's front porch (who I hadn't met yet), drinking beers (surprise) and joking around. So...I sat on the porch with them, got to know my neighbor and hung out until about 2:45 and got to join the guy talk. When we walked back to the house Donnie was still in a talkative mood still so we talked until 3:30. Matt woke up at 3:42 and got up and walked around so I didn't go to sleep until about 4.

I can't remember the last time I did that. I'm probably too old to keep doing that on a regular basis - but I sure had a good time. :)

Moving on...

I know, there's been a shocking lack of "real" content on the blog in the last 2 weeks. If you know me you know I clam up for a couple of reasons...I'm quiet when:

1. I'm designing {not the case}
2. Something's going on I don't want to discuss {stress/drama/etc}
3. I've fallen & I can't get up {you might be laughing, but, seriously}

So...OK - I had a biopsy & a bit of a scare & it took a week to get the results back - but I'M FINE and I'm back to blogging now, so watch out!

Now I just have to shake this song out of my head...

"Sense"-ational Sunday {night}...

Our senses tell a story. I've committed to recording my 5 senses for the past week to explore my sensory world. I challenge you to do the same. If you choose to do so, just blog your 5 senses every Sunday & let me know, I'd love to read them.

What a whirlwind week it's been! I am shocked at how little I blogged, but life is like that sometimes...so here are the sensory highlights of my week.

I SEE:
FedEx. Our offices are right next to the airport & I needed to drop off an overnight package after work one day. I always feel like I'm driving right up to the plane. I dunno, I just think it's cool. The process of next day delivery boggles my brain. Go FedEx!

I HEAR:
"It was like, love at first sight...with my ears". Loved, loved, LOVED the season 4 finale of the office. Paul Lieberstein is such a talented writer & the dialogue was fast & furious. I've listened to it while working on other things a few times now, just to make sure I haven't missed something. And awesome casting getting Amy Ryan, hope she stays with the cast next season. I've been talking like Yoda now...

I TASTE:
Okra. Fried. Yum. I always took this perfect food for granted until my friend Debby came down to visit and we went out for true Texas barbecue. She'd never heard of okra before {poor thing}. She loved it and described it as tasting like "fried everything good". Ain't it the truth? Fried okra is like, as good as it gets.

I TOUCH:
Paint. I was inspired by this Tony Soulie print & when I saw this fabric covered mousepad at Target I decided I would make my own interpretation. It's not finished, but it felt good to slosh around in paint for a while.

I SMELL:
Paper. You have to be a paper person to understand. Freshly printed paper at Luxe - I'm breathing that one in deep. Also the musty, delicious smell of old paper. I've always loved old books. When I was little I loved going through the zillions of old books my grandmother had on her shelves, picking random titles and reading as many as I could. Matt & I went to a few garage sales Saturday morning & I found 3 fabulous old books {2 "the world in pictures" books from the early 60's and a copy of Mother Goose from the late 50's}. We also headed over to the big half price books tonight on a mission to find a cookbook Matt wanted {he's in a smoking mood - I'm hoping this will turn into a taste section entry in the next couple of weeks!}.

Seeing paper in my sleep...*updated*

It's been a shipment week, which means all hands on deck at Luxe. Usually I'd be out packing boxes with the rest of the girls, but the arm is still not there yet - but I'm able to do a LOT more than last time. I'm helping by collating collection packs & designing & packing our new arty parties {make & takes for stores}. The warehouse looks amazing - I cannot believe what Pam, Jen & Brandy have accomplished out there this week!

New paper season is one of my favorite times of the year! First you see the colors, then you see the designs, then work with the prototype {which never does it justice}, then sell it, then you have to wait for the print run. Since we batched five lines + the new jotter shapes for May release, that means we've been waiting to meet these papers for a long time!

We'll be RAK'ing all 5 lines on the Luxe blog over the next week. Hop over to the Luxe blog to enter to win & go back every weekday until you've seen all the new goodies. Good luck!

Here's giveaway #2 - Capris

Here's giveaway #1 - Sundress

Milk, Eggs,Vodka...

I am LAUGHING OUT LOUD! I read about a book Milk, Eggs, Vodka a couple of weeks ago & vowed to check it out further online when I had time. I ran across a bonus short story inspired by the book that was too funny. Next time you make a grocery list, look at it out of context & see if it gives you a good laugh. Their "stories" are written around a collection of random discarded lists and are insane...

I also read about A la Cart: The Secret Lives of Grocery Shoppers
- in which the author imagines the identity of the shoppers behind found lists and writes some backstory about them. This stuff is pretty funny, or else I'm easily amused. Hope it makes you smile today!

Do you MOO???

OK, confession. I'm totally in LOVE with MOO cards & their sticker books. I bought a set of MOO minis for a friend's birthday coming up with a bunch of photos I had taken of her & pictures of some of her favorite things on the front & her name, cell & email on the back. MOO cards are about half the width of a business card & have awesome photo quality. Pair them with a mini card case & these are just about the cutest things around. They come in sets of 100 & you can upload up to 100 separate images to create your "deck".

Jen introduced me to these back in February & I've been dreaming about getting myself a set ever since. So far I've bought two sets as gifts - I am still deciding on how to indulge myself. Aren't these cute???

"Sense"-ational Sunday...the big wedding weekend edition

Our senses tell a story. I've committed to recording my 5 senses for the past week to explore my sensory world. I challenge you to do the same. If you choose to do so, just blog your 5 senses every Sunday & let me know, I'd love to read them.

Wow - what a weekend! Tammy's wedding was, well, it was the prettiest outdoor wedding I've ever been to. It was really great to hang out with family and even though we're absolutely exhausted, we're smiling - so enjoy the wedding version of sense-ational Sundays...

I SEE:

A beautiful bride and beautiful junior bridesmaids. I took 123 pictures. To see them all *click here*.

I HEAR:

Family voices. Amy & Haley giggling. People talking. Tracy laughing. And, yes, this is just Matt's immediate family {minus a niece & nephew who couldn't make it} - not including cousins.

I TASTE:

Cake. Really good cake. Especially the groom's cake.

I TOUCH:

Wedding ducks. Tammy's always loved ducks - I mean REALLY loved rubber ducks. Matt & Rusty were in charge of decorating their going away vehicle, but Tracy & I saw these boy/girl ducks at Walgreens & decided they needed to become part of the decorations. I made the veil out of a mesh laundry bag & duct tape. Cool, huh?

I SMELL:
Hairspray. Perfume. Um....garlic. Matt, Tracy & I took Elizabeth & James out to dinner at the Olive Garden for an early mother's day after the wedding.

Anyway, the wedding was absolutely beautiful, but I must sleep now before I fall over. :)

Saturday Etsy Picks...

Well, I have the old blog on a sneaky timer since I'm out of town :) Enjoy your Saturday & happy etsy browsing!

Here are some of the fabulous sites on Etsy that I frequent & wanted to share. If you're a regular reader you know how much I love & support this wonderful site for independent sellers. Not only is is an amazing site that's easy to navigate, it's a creative network on a global scale.

ModernJune...slick selections {oilcloth creations}
I'm a big fan of oilcloth. I'm still kicking myself for not buying the coolest oilcloth tote I've ever seen in Amsterdam last fall. Ever since I've been on the hunt for the ultimate oilcloth bag. These aren't the ones I fell in love with, but they're the closet I've found so far. ModernJune has tons of cool oilcloth creations - if you love aprons, this is a good site to check out!

Official Initial...a personalized stamp shop
Lots of owls. Lots of cupcakes. Chandeliers. Martinis. My kinda shop. There are a couple of outstanding personalized stamp shops on etsy, but the whimsical, trendy designs make Official Initial a favorite.I love personalized stamps {probably a byproduct of my mom getting me several as a kid}. I look at these every once & a while and try to pick a favorite, but every time I look I see a new one I like!

Belated NSD Giveaway winner!!!

Special thanks to Matt who picked my winner tonight...it is NORMA KENNEDY!

Norma said...
"What an awesome RAK- Yummy- no one near me sells this pretty stuff ! Thank You, Norma Kennedy from Indiana "
12:09 AM

Norma - email your mailing address to emily@luxedesigns.com to claim your prize! Thank you to all of you who entered & keep reading...you never know when the next RAK is coming!

Highs & Lows...

I was ready for a change. My hair has basically looked the same, for well, forever. While some people might think this isn't a huge difference - it's huge to me. I had my hair cut today (same cut as usual, but a little shorter), but here's the big catch:

See the contrast? I darkened overall & got chunks of bleached hair dotted all over my head. I really like it (much less "yellow" and it makes me super confidant about my increasingly gray hair (my hair really started to turn after my stroke). I feel all sassy - and it's been a while since I felt that way about my hair. So woohoo - go change!

Loving Little Miss Know-It-All...

"Before PonyTail started making Barbie Doll cases they furnished tween and teen-age girls with diaries, jewelry boxes, autograph books, binders and pencil cases. They also made this pocket Webster's dictionary, helpfully titled Miss "Know-It-All". It gives the meaning of 20,000 words, spelling rules, weights and measures, birthstones and flowers, proper gifts for wedding anniversaries, plus a handy copy of the Gettysburg Address (no girl should be without that!)

In fair condition, as pictured. Binding is light blue vinyl with embossed spine. 300 pages of words, text and little pictures to use in your art work. Published in 1959."

I bought this beautiful baby on Etsy for only $4.50 and am as pleased as punch. How great is that??? I don't think I can bring myself to alter it, but I'm looking forward to scanning in a bunch of it & printing off reproduction pages to do things with. I LOVE retro books like this and I was so thrilled with my accidental find that I had to share!

Weddings are a lot of work...and I'm just a guest

Lists, lists, everywhere...Matt's youngest sister is getting married in New Braunfels this weekend & we're all headed down Friday night for a big family weekend. It seems like forever since I've been to a wedding...the last one I went to was, well, mine in '99. I was the last in my crowd to get married - my closest friends at the time had all married in their early twenties (at least a good 8 years before me). Life rolls on & now I find myself with several single friends and the "little" girls in our family are growing up and I'm realizing I am going to have to go to more of these. Probably a lot more over the next 10 years...so much to do now!

"Sense"-ational Sundays...

Our senses tell a story. I've committed to recording my 5 senses for the past week to explore my sensory world. I challenge you to do the same. If you choose to do so, just blog your 5 senses every Sunday & let me know, I'd love to read them.

I got a great comment on my sense-ational Sunday last week - Crystal said "I bet it really makes you appreciate your surroundings!" That comment stuck with me and I realized it really has. I am conscious of anything sensory that "creates a memory" during the week. Before I was primarily focused on what I saw and what I heard, but paying more attention to all my 5 senses has made me a better scrapbooker.

Also before I started, I wanted to give a shout out to Jen (Moody), Jen (Tillman) & Brandy who have regularly been doing Sense-ational Sunday posts with me. I'm going to start a section in my sidebar for Sense-ational Sunday posters, so let me know if you're up for the challenge & I'll add you to my links!

I SEE:
Meg again this weekend. She had classes to kit up at Luxe this weekend which means she come over & spent the night again. She has a new haircut (which she says has already grown out way too much) and these jeans. These are her favorite new pants. While her parents were out of town she ripped and bleached them herself out of the closet (oh, I remember those days).

I HEAR:
I've had Finger 11's song Paralyzer stuck in my head this week (which is so unlike what I usually like, I'm at a loss). I've also started listening to Kidd Kraddick on the way to work ever since Ashley's husband Ben became their webmaster. It's a long story...but they've gotten me listening to Freddy. Click here to read all about Freddy & his saga. Can you say young Billy Joel? Sweet...

I TASTE:
Electra, yum. Tastes like springtime. It's a light wine made from Orange Muscat grape juice just on the verge — halfway between wine and grape juice. The alcohol is only 4% (most wines are at least 12%) - so it's just my speed and it doesn't make me sleepy or goofy. It's really peachy with melon undertones and is awesome with fresh fruit.

I TOUCH:
The computer keyboard. Oof, I've been on the computer a lot lately. I've had lots of creative time, but it's been in illustrator building web components for work or working on button designs for ManHandled. I'm aching to touch paper & paint but there just hasn't been time. The picture? I thought it would be funny to take a picture of me typing & while I was playing with my camera settings I took this...and, yes, I do have like a zillion flower rings now. What can I say? I blame Etsy.

I SMELL:
Lemony Flutter. This stuff smells and is amazing - and a little goes such a long way! Stacy originally told me about it when we were out on a "teacher field trip" at ScrapBowl and I've made sure I've had some ever since. My skin is so dry & this stuff is great for rehydrating my scar without getting all slimy (like the vitamin E oil) - so it's been Lemony Flutter by day & the E oil at night.

My Etsy Picks of the Week...

So, as part of my re-commitment to blogging every day, I'm faithfully returning to my Etsy pick Saturdays. I LOVE Etsy & find myself turning to the site more and more. I could go on & on about how the site works & the independent selling philosophy in the modern market, but nobody really cares about that stuff but nerds like me, so I'm gonna zip it & get to the good stuff!

BluLima...because we all need this poster
I recently purchased this print from BluLima. I have it hanging in my office {it's really great!}. It's a reproduction of a vintage poster commissioned by the British Government in August 1939 to be posted in times of "crisis or invasion". There where three posters of similar design created for public confidence and this one was never posted. BluLima screen prints them in a TON of colors on gorgeous deckled edge paper...

Lupin's Shop...having fun with felt
Talk about a shop with a sense of humor! I'm felt-obsessed lately & love looking at all of the amazing and hilarious felted goodies on this site (including moustache disguises & "lucky pants" pins). Also here are some other items well worth looking at: Plush Bird Pins, Plush Owl Pins & the Cupcake Brooch.

Scarlet Beautiful...for the artist in all of us
This little shop is filled with goodness. It has some great art prints (this 6x6 could be added to the front of a chipboard album or other altered art), some framed, some loose. But I didn't pick it for the prints - I picked it for her amazing selection of stickers she's printed! If you're a collage artist or you have a style like mine (I've finally classified my style - graphic- rocker-"grunge") you'll love these. Check out: Indie Band Stickers, Retro Sticker Fun & Through the Viewfinder. She actually has several different Indie Band sets, so click around. She even has altered collages and occasionally jewelery.

Dreaming of work...

That's what I did last night. All my dreams were of design team entries & the new website design I'm working on. It's like sensory overload. Pam & I really have our work cut out for us with all the amazing entries to sort through! And to top it all off, Matt's etsy shop is on hyper-drive! Which is great - there just aren't enough hours in a day to do all the things I want to do. :) like blog...

So today I'll share some pictures...I was going to save these for Sunday for my "I smell", but they're so pretty, I couldn't wait to show someone...

These came on my birthday from my in-laws. How cool is that? My mother-in-law joked they were to make up for all the times they've forgotten my birthday (LOL). And to make it even better there were Circus Roses {my absolute favorite!} in the bouquet. I'm calling them my "fire flowers" and am really enjoying them.

Have a wonderful day & I promise to get back in the swing of blogging, starting now. :)
